US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan has compelled China to consider “comprehensive action” that speeds up plans to reunify with the island, according to a report by the state-owned Global Times.
Pelosi’s visit was a political “show” that China could capitalise on, some experts suggested, by using the event to enter Taiwan’s airspace and “water areas”, the report said, adding that options included strikes on Taiwan military targets, as well as pushing through new legislation to bring the island under its sovereignty.
Wang Jiangyu, a professor of law at the City University in Hong Kong, was quoted as saying that China would use the incident “to strengthen its sovereignty claim over Taiwan”.
But China knew the importance of “strategic patience” – as shown by its tactics to crack down on turmoil in Hong Kong, the report said, quoting an unnamed Beijing-based expert on international relations, who added: “So this time, China will teach the US a lesson again, as it will use US mistakes to comprehensively change the Taiwan Straits situation, just as it did in Hong Kong in recent years.”
