China media blitz to push free-trade zone on Hainan Island

(ATF) The majority of China’s state media is reporting the launch of a network promotion of the country’s free-trade zones, with a focus on the newest and biggest free-trade area, on Hainan Island.

Numerous top leaders joined China’s National Cyberspace Administration and the Ministry of Propaganda instructed all units to use online promotion to further publicise and explain the Party Central Committee’s support for Hainan’s comprehensive and deepening reform, with its new pilot tax-free trade zone, Hainan Free Trade Port.

Journalists from state media and other influencers will spend over a week on the tropical island promoting the benefits of the new zone.

China Economic Net will work with the Central News website to conduct ‘cloud publicity’ and interviews from across 18 free-trade zones.

This rather large media event brings all of China’s media assets into play for blanket coverage to encourage business people and others to set up shop on the island. CCTV, China’s State broadcaster, has also created a landing page for a multimedia visit to the area.

The Hainan Free Trade Port turns the island into a comprehensive bonded area. The bonded warehouse, import-export trade, tax-free shopping and other functions are on offer at the popular tourist destination.

The General Office of the State Council issued a “Plan for Accelerating the Integration and Optimisation of Special Customs Supervision Areas” in September 2015.

According to existing export processing zones, bonded logistics parks, cross-border industrial zones, bonded port areas, and qualified bonded areas will gradually be integrated into comprehensive bonded areas.

The newly established special customs supervision areas will be uniformly named comprehensive bonded areas. As a pilot zone Hainan free-trade port is strategically placed to compete with Singapore and Hong Kong.
