Japan’s Mazda Motor Corporation said on Thursday that it hopes to achieve carbon neutrality at its factories worldwide by 2035.
The carmaker will procure electricity from renewable sources and use carbon-neutral vehicles at its factories, among other measures, it said in a statement.
“Mazda will take on the challenge of achieving carbon neutrality at its global factories in 2035, and aiming for carbon neutrality in the entire supply chain in 2050,” the Hiroshima-based company said.
The group announced a roadmap that would begin with energy-saving efforts in its car production, including developing paint that cures at low temperatures, and streamlining energy use in the assembly process.
Carbon Neutrality in China
Mazda said it would work with Chinese authorities to expand the supply and demand of carbon-neutral power in its factories there.
Changan Mazda is a 50:50 joint venture between Changan Automobile and Mazda based in Nanjing.
“We are also considering various forms of decarbonisation, such as lowering power generation in factories and procuring power from renewable energy power generation companies,” the statement said.
Mazda would also develop carbon-neutral fuels, initially in its in-house transport, in cooperation with the Hiroshima Automobile Industry-Academia-Government Collaboration Promotion Council, which promotes the practical application of next-generation biofuels. increase.
“Based on these domestic efforts, we will promote the optimal approach at overseas factories as well,” Mazda said.
