Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg’s enthusiasm for the metaverse led to him ploughing $10 billion into his company’s Reality Labs division last year, yet many clearly doubt the wisdom of that move, despite some banks estimating that it could be worth trillions if people are attracted to virtual reality worlds.

Apple CEO Tim Cook appears to be one of the sceptics, having told Dutch publication Bright: “I always think it’s important that people understand what something is. And I’m not really sure the average person can tell you what metaverse is,” according to a report in The Verge, which said Cook wondered if people would want to spend extended periods of time in a virtual reality world – and those remarks came from the head of a tech conglomerate building “all manner of AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality) hardware”.
