Blinken’s China Speech Unlikely to Hold Revelations

The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken plans to deliver a major speech outlining policy towards China, according to US officials.

Blinken will make his presentation at George Washington University in the US capital, at an event hosted by the Asia Society think tank, the Department of State said.

But a source familiar with plans for the China strategy told Reuters that the contents covered publicly by Blinken were not expected to be very detailed and would largely be a compilation of statements the administration has already made about China.

Republicans have criticised the Democratic administration of Joe Biden for allegedly lacking a formal strategy for dealing with China.

The policy announcement follows a strategy for the Asia-Pacific region outlined in February in which Washington vowed to commit more diplomatic and security resources to the region to counter China.

Biden is due to host leaders of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at a summit in Washington on May 12-13.

The US president is expected to visit Asia, including South Korea and Japan, later in the month.
