Russia and China Have Designs on the Arctic: NATO – CBC

NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg has issued a warning about Russia and China during a visit to Canada, saying there has been a big military build-up in the Arctic, with Moscow opening “hundreds of new and former Soviet-era Arctic military sites, including airfields and deepwater ports”, while also using the region to test new and advanced weapons, such as hypersonic missiles, according to a report by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

China has declared itself a “near-Arctic” state and is investing billions in energy infrastructure and research projects in the region, the NATO chief said during meetings with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau in northern Canada late last week, CBC reported. “Beijing and Moscow have also pledged to intensify practical operation(s) in the Arctic – this forms part of the deepening strategic partnership that challenges our values and our interests,” Stoltenberg was quoted as saying, adding that he emphasized these things because Sweden and Finland plan to join the military alliance, while Canada also has interests in the region.
