Tesla has applied to register its electric vehicles, batteries and solar products for sale in Thailand, according to Electrek, which cited documents posted recently on Twitter and said this would be “the first country in Southeast Asia where Tesla would officially sell its vehicles” despite the fact it has yet to set up service centres and Superchargers.
A key reason for the move is the size of the Thai car market, which is expected to sell more than 800,000 vehicles this year, and the fact that Thais are already importing or leasing Tesla vehicles, it said. In March 2020, the Thai police leased seven Model 3 Teslas on a monthly basis for use in motorcades for “VVIPs”, according to a report by Coconuts Bangkok.
